10 Inside Tips to Talk to Your Child About Minecraft

As parents, you are the first generation to raise children in a digital world. Back in 2001, Marc Prensky coined the terms, Digital Native and Digital Immigrants.

Digital Natives are people born in the digital age, and thus a native to the land of technology. Digital Immigrants are people who are born or brought up before the widespread use of technology, and therefore an immigrant. So when your child uses terms like badlion, pvped, and biomes all in the sentence, as a digital immigrant, your head may start spinning from confusion.

We, at Ministry to Parents, want to give you a cheat sheet to help you connect with your digital native. Terms like badlion are part of a game called Minecraft, their version of our generation’s Super Mario Bros.

What Is It?

Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games of all time. Only one other game has reached this pinnacle: Tetris. Released in 2011 by Mojang, Minecraft is not your typical game with levels and points, but rather the goal is to build and survive.

Players problem-solve, use creativity, learn life skills, and collaborate with others online to build worlds, mazes, and much more, i.e., Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings, Space Shuttle, and Battlestar Galactica.

Other Uses

Because there is no explicit content, educators love to use the learning platform to teach critical thinking, systems thinking, business skills, collaborations, and creativity.

We asked a tween, who is an avid Minecraft player, to come up with ten questions parents can ask their child or tween about Minecraft. We hope it helps you start a conversation with your child!
